Murderbot: the new dark comedy series that premieres on Friday on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ continues to strengthen its catalog with original and bold proposals, and the next big bet goes by the name of Murderbot. This new series, set to premiere on Friday, May 16, promises to captivate science fiction fans with an unexpected combination of biting humor, action and social commentary.

Based on the popular books by Martha Wells, Murderbot follows the story of a security android who decides to hack his own system to escape the control of the company that built him. Despite having gained a sort of free will, the title character remains trapped between dangerous missions, curiosity about human emotions and an unorthodox obsession with futuristic soap operas. The series is inspired by the first book in the saga, All Systems Red, which won awards such as Hugo and Nebula, two of the most prestigious in the world of science fiction.

The protagonist, played by Alexander Skarsgård, is a “security construct” who finds himself forced to hide his autonomy as he navigates a world where machines are seen as mere tools. Although technically designed to protect humans, Murderbot has a peculiar aversion to social interaction and emotions, which makes each mission a source of frustration and, at the same time, self-discovery. What does Murderbot really want? Being left alone to watch your favorite series and try to understand your place in the universe.

With a tone that alternates between the comical and the existential, the series plays with themes such as identity, freedom and the nature of empathy – always with a touch of sarcasm. The script takes a less conventional approach to the science fiction genre, focusing more on the protagonist's internal dilemmas than on space battles or special effects.

Murderbot premieres the first two episodes on May 16, with the remainder being released weekly through July 11. This launch strategy has been increasingly adopted by Apple TV+, allowing it to maintain subscriber interest over several months.

For the more curious readers, the television series closely follows the plot of the first volume of the literary saga. If the success is confirmed, there are several books in the same collection that could serve as the basis for future seasons, which could transform Murderbot into one of the platform's most enduring productions.

Judging by the first trailer, already available online, everything indicates that Apple TV+ may have another hit on its hands. With a bold visual style, sharp dialogue and a main character that breaks away from the usual clichés, Murderbot has the potential to captivate an audience looking for something different in the current television landscape.

If you like stories with a touch of social criticism, artificial intelligence and dark humor, this premiere is worth marking on your calendar. After all, how many series do you know in which the hero just wants to stay quiet and watch soap operas?
