XPANCEO presents smart contact lenses that charge the battery remotely and detect glaucoma
XPANCEO, a company that promises to revolutionize computing technologies, presented three new prototypes of contact lenses during MWC 2025. Their goal is to provide new information about the health of the eyes, and even identify some diseases, such as glaucoma.
To this end, the lenses have intraocular sensors powered by completely wireless and remote charging — that is, with energy transfer through the air.
One of the prototypes shown by XPANCEO recognizes body data directly through tear fluids. The lens uses nanoparticles to allow high-sensitivity monitoring of metrics such as glucose, as well as hormones such as cortisol, estradiol, estrone, progesterone, testosterone, vitamins B1, B2, B3, E and D.
Another concept shown by the company allows non-invasive management of glaucoma, via a smartphone app. According to the company, it is possible to obtain “instantaneous and highly accurate” measurements, well before significant vision loss is noticed.
In addition, XPANCEO also has a solution that uses augmented reality to display immersive content directly on the lenses. Instead of using external images, as was the case in previous generations, the lenses now have an integrated microdisplay to show elements previously only available through headsets.
There is also another smart lens, which uses a wireless data transmission antenna to transmit information directly from itself to smartphones.
For now, XPANCEO’s concepts are nothing more than a possible look at the future, but without immediate applications. After all, the prototypes are not yet expected to be commercialized, and are probably years away from being launched.
