Galaxy S25 Ultra: S-Pen to lose some of its features according to retailers
Not all features of the Galaxy S24 Ultra will survive the jump to the 2025 generation, as a reliable leaker recently suggested based on sources from the retailer scene. Those who use the S Pen the pen to remotely control the camera, for example, may be disappointed by the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Even for those who do not use the S Pen for writing on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the pen is still a very practical tool in other ways as it can also be used to remotely control/trigger the camera, and gesture control is only possible with the Bluetooth functionality of the S Pen. This is exactly what is going to be omitted from the Galaxy S25 Ultra, according to information supposedly obtained by Indian leaker Ishan Agarwal via retailers.
Possible reasons for lack of Bluetooth...Agarwal's information has not yet been confirmed by other sources and should thus be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism, especially since it is not exactly clear why Samsung would implement such a downgrade. Some speculate that this could be a cost-cutting measure as it would also eliminate the need for charging in the S Pen slot. However, Samsung would only save a few cents per Galaxy S25 model for the transistor and Bluetooth chip.
Competition with the Apple Pencil Pro...The possible removal of the gyroscope and accelerometer sensors could further limit the S Pen's capabilities, making it harder for it to compete with the Apple Pencil Pro, which already has robust features such as barrel roll. The lack of innovation and use of features that could improve the user experience could make Samsung appear to be giving up on competing in this market.
Impact on public perception...If the rumors come true, Samsung could face a wave of public criticism, even among those who do not use the S Pen. The perception that the company is backtracking on its innovations could generate a feeling of disappointment among consumers, damaging its image in the market.
In short, the decision to slow down the advancement of the S Pen may not be Samsung's best choice. Focusing on essential features such as drawing and writing, instead of embracing the reduction of Bluetooth features, could be a more promising path. We can only wait and see if these speculations are confirmed and what Samsung's next steps will be in its product line.
The battery life of the Galaxy S25 Ultra will probably only improve minimally due to the elimination of the Bluetooth and charging functionality; the chipset and display are likely to have a much greater impact on power consumption. Samsung may also have deliberately removed some features in order to reduce the weight and thickness of the casing. All those who use the S Pen to remotely control the camera will be disappointed by such a downgrade, but market studies have shown that this functionality is not used very often.
