If you've never used Discord, maybe you're old (like me), or you don't play much online or you don't consume many podcasts (or you only listen to them on Spotify).
The fact is that this messenger is a true phenomenon among gamers. To the point that Sony has just announced that it is improving the integration of the platform on the PlayStation 5. And the announcement was very festive on social media.
From now on, users will be able to participate in voice calls directly from the console.
First released last year, Discord support on PS5 currently requires you to manually transfer a call using the app on your phone or PC.
Sony is now rolling out an update that integrates Discord directly into the PS5 dashboard so you can select, on-screen, the server or DM group you want to join.
The update will roll out gradually over the next few weeks, starting with PS5 owners in Japan and Asia.
It will then reach users in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and, finally, the USA and Canada.
There is no information yet about Brazil.
To use the new feature, you'll need to update your PS5 to the latest system software.
Additionally, you will need to link your Discord and PlayStation Network accounts.
This latest update from Sony puts the Discord experience almost on par with what Microsoft offers on Xbox.
Bill Gates' company brought the messenger to the console for the first time in July 2022.
In November of the same year, players no longer needed a phone to access the app.
Today you can also broadcast your matches live to your friends via Discord.
What is Discord...Discord is a messenger with text and audio support that also allows you to make voice and video calls. Initially, it was aimed at the gaming community, but it grew to the point of surpassing the mark of 200 million active users per month.
By reaching different audiences, it has become a space that can be used to chat with friends or participate in large communities on specific topics.
It also has other differences compared to the competition, such as the possibility of creating channels, servers, personalized emojis and installing bots.
There are several debates about the platform's security, even more so after some heavy cases of virtual crimes involving it. The truth, however, is that Discord is not that different from any social network – and all of them are subject, unfortunately, to this type of inappropriate conduct.
