Nokia announced this Monday (10) that it made the first call in the world using a new technology called “immersive audio and video”, abandoning the current monophonic calls. According to the company, the new option improves the quality of a call with three-dimensional sound, making interactions more realistic.
The call was made by Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark, who called Stefan Lindström, Ambassador for Digitization and New Technologies of Finland;
He was also present in the room when the first 2G call was made by the company, in 1991;
The call was made from a common cell phone with a 5G network;
Monophonic calls, currently used, compress the audio elements and have a flatter, less detailed sound. The new immersive connection technology is based on 3D audio;
The intention is that the caller who has the technology will hear everything as if they were with another person — basically a 3D call;
Nokia is still seeking licensing for the new technology, which will be part of the next 5G Advanced standard.
''We demonstrate the future of voice calls. This is now becoming standardized so that network providers, chipset makers and handset makers can start implementing it in their products.''...Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark told Reuters.
According to Nokia, in addition to immersive person-to-person calls, the technology can be used in teleconferences, where participants' voices can be separated based on their spatial locations (space and environment where they are).
This is because the vast majority of smartphones have at least two microphones with which this technology can be implemented, transmitting the environmental characteristics of a call in real time.
“It’s the biggest advancement in the live voice calling experience since the introduction of monophonic telephone audio used today on smartphones and PCs,” said Jenni Lukander, president of Nokia Technologies.
As Nokia still seeks licensing to officially launch the new technology, the service should take a few years to be available to users.
