Starlink has growth of 260% in Brazil

While Elon Musk uses X (formerly Twitter) to wrestle with Brazilian justice (learn more about the subject by clicking here), another of the billionaire's companies has been gaining more and more space in Brazil. In just a year and a half, Starlink almost tripled in size in the country.

According to data from the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), the company had 57,605 satellite broadband accesses in Brazilian territory in May 2023. At the time, this represented a 0.1% share in the Brazilian market.

Two months later, it already had 90,763 customers, leaving Sky/AT&T behind, with 64,674 accesses. In February this year, the number of Starlink customers rose to 149,615, most of them in more remote regions, such as the Amazon and the Central-West. This represents a growth of 260% and 0.3% of total accesses in Brazil.

With this performance, Musk's company is getting closer to the North American giant Hughes, which operates in the country with 180,259 accesses. Remembering that Claro, Vivo and Oi lead the market in offering broadband internet connections, but, in the vast majority, access is via the fixed network.

Initially, the company provided satellite connection to schools in the Amazon.

The operating license was granted by Anatel two years ago and, in the first six months, the company entered the list of the 50 largest in broadband offerings.

Recently, Starlink published an ad on the old Twitter offering 50% discounts on package subscriptions.

The practice has been used to accelerate the group’s expansion in the country
