Android 15 may get a new "Even Dimmer" function, ideal for smartphone sessions in bed at night

As reported by Android Authority, a code was discovered in Android 15 that hints at a new function - and this could be particularly interesting for those who like to spend time on their smartphone before going to sleep.

With the update to Android 15, which is planned for the end of 2024, a new function could be introduced on Android smartphones: The "Even Dimmer", which is intended to reduce the display brightness beyond the normal level.

The previous "Extra Dark" function of Android 14 already reduces the brightness of the display by reducing bright colors more than the manual/automatic brightness setting allows. The "Even Dimmer" function is intended to go one step further and support adaptive brightness control. This means that users do not have to constantly activate and deactivate the "Extra Dark" function manually.

This information comes from the Android specialists at Android Authority who have found a reference to the new dimming function in the operating system code. Whether the feature is actually coming remains to be seen. As Android 15 is currently still in the beta phase, the function could also be removed again.

Especially handy in bed at night...When it's bright outside, smartphone displays need to be very bright in order to be easy to read. In the dark, however, too much brightness means unnecessary strain on the eyes. What's more, the blue light emissions from modern displays inhibit the production of the sleep hormone melatonin and can reduce the quality of sleep. So dimming the screen considerably can not only help to protect the eyes, but also improve the quality of sleep.
