When will we have artificial intelligence that will surpass the intelligence of any human? According to Elon Musk, this will happen next year or, at the latest, in 2026. The information is from Reuters. The speech came during an interview on spaces do X (formerly Twitter), the social network's live system.
“If we define AGI (artificial general intelligence) as smarter than the smartest human, I think that's probably within the next year or two years,” Musk said when asked about the timeline for AGI development.
The billionaire, who was also a co-founder of OpenAI, also said that the lack of advanced chips was hampering the training of Grok's version 2 model, the chatbot from his new artificial intelligence company, xAI.
Musk founded xAI last year as a challenger to OpenAI, a company he sued for abandoning its original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity on a non-profit basis. OpenAI denies the allegations.
Other statements from the billionaire involved telling the CEO of the Norwegian wealth fund, Nicolai Tangen, that AIs are limited by the availability of electricity and that the next version of Grok is expected to be trained in May.
Grok chatbot training encountered setbacks due to lack of advanced chips:
Training the Grok 2 model required around 20,000 Nvidia chips, the advanced H100 model.
Elon Musk claims that the Grok 3 and later models will require 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips.
The businessman also pointed out that, although the chip shortage has been a major obstacle to the development of AI so far, the supply of electricity will be crucial in the next one or two years.
On a topic that has been talked about a lot these days, the competition of his electric car brand, Tesla, against the apparent dominance of Chinese automakers in the field, Musk reiterated that Chinese automakers are “the most competitive in the world” and represent “the toughest competitive challenges” for Tesla.
