Heidelberg iT Management is building data center using 3D printer
Construction of a data center for Heidelberg iT Management has begun in Heidelberg, Germany. According to DataCenter Dynamics, the building is 3D printed using recycled building materials(side image). According to the client, it will be “the largest building in Europe, printed on a 3D printer”. Operation of the data center will begin before the end of this year.
The construction will take around 450 tons of 100% recyclable special concrete. At the same time, the binder is expected to provide 55% less CO2 emissions compared to cement. The walls will be finished by a special painting robot.
The area of the Baufeld 5 data center will be less than 600 m2. Although the Cobod BOD2 3D printer only takes 140 hours to print directly, there is more work to be done. Construction began in March and will end in July of this year, after which interior decoration will begin. The new data center is reportedly Heidelberg iT Management's fourth in Heidelberg.
3D printing of buildings has been practiced around the world for a long time, including in data centers. Thus, it is known that the North American EdgeCloudLink (ECL) intends to produce modular data centers powered by hydrogen generators, whose construction will also be carried out using 3D printing technologies.
