Test for new emergency warning system will ring millions of UK phones
At the end of this month of April, the United Kingdom will test a new system of emergency warnings, at national level, with an alarm that will last 10 seconds.
The United Kingdom has scheduled the national test of its new emergency warning service for April 23rd. At 3 pm, for 10 seconds, cell phones across the country will receive a message, along with vibration and sound – which will sound, even if cell phones are silent.
When sending the message, people will only need to tap “OK” or ignore the notification, as if it were any other.
In the future, as explained by the government, the warning will serve for “life-threatening emergencies”, such as extreme weather phenomena, from fires to floods. However, the objective is that it will only be sent in the event of an immediate threat to people’s lives, so – it is hoped – months or years may pass without an alert being received.
In addition, he explained that carrying out the test is important, as it will allow people to recognize the warning and know how to respond, in case of a real emergency.
According to Sky News, Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Dowden explained that the warning could one day “be the sound that saves your life”. National Police Chiefs’ Council Deputy Chief of Police Owen Weatherill said services will “listen carefully to public feedback” to ensure any subsequent alerts have “a positive impact”.
As we have seen here, Portugal will also be working on a rapid alert system, “cell broadcast”, which will allow emergency alerts to be sent to all mobile networks, 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G. According to Sky news, the United States of America, Canada and Japan will also be implementing similar services.
