Steam will end support for Windows 7/8 in 2024
Although Windows 7 has been on the market for over 13 years, it ranks better than operating systems released since then. That's probably why one out of every 20 Windows systems still runs Windows 7. But if you're a PC gamer, it's better to use the latest version of Windows. Steam has decided to stop supporting Windows 7/8/8.1 on January 1, 2024.
According to Valve's support page, the reason for the drop in support lies with Chrome. Steam uses an embedded version of Chrome to serve its store pages and other content, as this browser feature is no longer being updated. Steam said that the upcoming Steam release relies on Windows security updates that can only be installed on Windows 10 and 11. You can't blame Valve or Google. Microsoft officially end of Support for Windows 7Hanji is over two years old and stopped supporting Windows 8.1 a few months ago.
You will need to update Windows to continue playing after support ends. Valve explained:
“As of January 1, 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 operating systems. After that, the Steam client will no longer work on that version of Windows. Users must update to the latest version of Windows to continue using Steam and games or other products purchased on Steam.”
Steam is cloud-based and offers the ability to migrate downloaded games, so moving to a new Windows PC or new operating system is a breeze. To know how to backup Steam games, please refer to ‘How-To: How to backup all Steam games on my PC locally’.
