Leak reveals Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
It is the leaker Kuba Wojciechowski who releases a series of details about Qualcomm’s next generation of Snapdragon 8 circuits, which will reportedly be called Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with the designation SM8650 but go by the code names Lanai or Pineapple.
The circuit will have eight cores according to the 2+3+2+1 configuration, but what the different cores will entail in concrete terms is not known. Previously, the cores in Snapdragon 8 were classified up to and including “gold cores”, but according to the leaked information, Gen 3 contains both one called “gold+” and two pieces of “titanium”, but in what ways are they different from previous “gold” is not clear. The cores also go by the designations “Hayes” and “Hunter”, which are completely new and previously unknown cores, which may mean that Qualcomm has chosen to start from scratch when designing the processor.
Another detail that may indicate that they have started from scratch is that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 completely lacks support for 32-bit code, and will thus only run 64-bit code. However, it is a major change on paper, as almost no programming is done with 32-bit code anymore.
The processor will also use an Adreno 750 GPU.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is expected to be presented in the fourth quarter of 2023.
