EU imposes sanctions against Tinkoff and Alfa-Bank

Tinkoff, Alfa-Bank and Rosbank were included in the tenth EU sanctions package, published on February 25. In addition to banks, the National Wealth Fund was added to the sanctions list.

EU Published the tenth sanctions package, 121 natural and legal persons were added to the list.

Three credit institutions were sanctioned: Alfa-Bank, Tinkoff Bank and Rosbank. The European Union explains the sanctions against these banks by the fact that the sector in which they operate provides “significant revenues” to the state of the Russian Federation, as well as their role in the economy: all three banks are included in the list of systemically important.

Assets of EU-sanctioned banks are subject to freezing, Europeans are prohibited from providing finance and other economic resources.

In addition to banks, the National Welfare Fund and the Rossiya Segodnya MIA media group were included in the sanctions list.

In “Tinkoff” reportedprepared for such a scenario. The bank assured that customers will be able to use Tinkoff's services "as always, regardless of external circumstances". The sanctions will not affect the service of the credit institution's 26 million customers, it said in a statement.

The Council of the EU previously disclosed the content of the sanctions without naming specific people and companies. In particular, it was reported that EU countries agreed to expand the export ban to Russia on critical technologies and industrial goods (including electronics, auto parts, construction products) as well as dual-use products.

In February, Russia, along with the British Virgin Islands, Marshall Islands and Costa Rica, found itself on the so-called gray list of tax jurisdictions maintained by the European Union.
