iOS 16.3: All New Features

Apple released iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 to all users after several weeks of testing. While this is a minor update, there are still some new features worth knowing about.

Security Keys...Security Keys for Apple ID gives users the option to add a third-party security key to their account, which will be required for authentication when signing in to a new device or accessing an Apple ID.

The security key is designed to replace the verification codes sent to Apple devices when logging in on another device, which is the company's default authentication method. Apple says that physical security keys provide strong protection against phishing and unauthorized account access.

Security keys can be set up on iOS/iPadOS 16.3 devices by going to Apple ID‌ > Security Keys and following the instructions. iPhones, iPads and Macs support FIDO certified security keys like the Yubikey.

Unity wallpaper...Apple has added a new Unity wallpaper designed to celebrate Black History Month, which takes place in February.

Support for HomePods...iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 add support for the second generation HomePod released last week.

Changes to Emergency SOS...Emergency SOS has been updated to prevent accidental emergency calls. Calls can still be placed by pressing the side button together with the volume up or down button, but now the buttons must be released to make the call.

Fix for screen issue on iPhone 14 Pro Max...An issue that could cause intermittent horizontal lines to temporarily appear on the iPhone 14 Pro Max screen after activation has been resolved and the lines should no longer appear.

Bug Fixes...iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 are dealing with several bugs including issues with Freeform, lock screen and Siri.

-Fixes an issue in Freeform where some drawing strokes created with Apple Pencil or your finger may not appear in shared frames

-Fixes an issue where the wallpaper may appear black on the lock screen

-Fixes an issue where the Home lock screen widget does not accurately display the Home app status

-Resolves an issue where Siri may not correctly respond to music requests

-Resolves issues where Siri requests in CarPlay may not be understood correctly

Vulnerability Fixes...The iOS 16.3 and iPadOS 16.3 updates address a long list of security vulnerabilities with Safari, Weather, Mail, Screen Time, Kernel and more.
