SONY

new playstation 5 with controller

PS5 still lacks promised 8K support

When Sony announced the PlayStation 5 to the world, it revealed the vast majority of its technical specifications, even if many of its features were not made available on the day of its launch.

For example, VRR support and native 1440p resolution were promised, but only became available long after the console hit the market. However, support for 8K resolution is very explicit on the console's box, and two years after its launch, it still isn't available.

The 8K logo is prominently displayed on the console's box, but if you expect to be able to output a signal at that resolution with your console, you're going to be put off. To be honest, in practical terms this feature should only be missed by a very limited amount of users, but it's still annoying to advertise a feature on the packaging and not have it available two years after its launch. What if users suddenly complain about non-compliance?

It is at least possible for programmers to use this resolution as the internal rendering resolution, even if the image is not produced as such. This works as a high quality anti-aliasing solution. The game "The Touryst" uses exactly this procedure.

I'm curious to see if Sony will add something later or if the 8K logo will be quietly removed from the PS5 box at some point.
