Corning lança o Gorilla Glass Victus 2

Gorilla Glass Victus 2 — Corning's most durable protective glass put to the test

The new flagships of the Samsung Galaxy S23, which will debut in February, may receive the most secure screens yet. The thing is, Corning, which is the leading supplier of protective eyewear for smartphones, has announced Gorilla Glass Victus 2 — the most durable protective glass that can survive a three-foot drop to concrete without damage, according to with Corning itself. Concrete is traditionally one of the biggest threats to smartphone glass.

It is worth noting that Corning has not made any compromises to achieve concrete strength. Just like the Gorilla Glass Victus, released in 2020, it will withstand drops from 2m high onto asphalt, up to 20 consecutive drops from a meter high and will also be equally resistant to scratches.

According to company representatives, the division responsible for the development and production of Gorilla Glass decided to provide protection precisely against concrete in the new generation of glass, optimizing the structure and "stress profiles" until engineers found a satisfactory option.

According to Corning, more than 30% of smartphone drops occur on concrete, more than any other surface. As technologies for protecting against impacts from other surfaces have improved, concrete has remained the main "pain point" for smartphone users, and now the resistance to this material has also increased.

Over the years of research, the average weight and size of smartphones has changed. Corning estimates that, on average, devices are 15% heavier and 10% larger than models 4 years ago. To simulate dropping a smartphone on concrete, 200-gram blocks with glass (conventional smartphone) are used, which in a special suspension hit with glass on a large sandpaper fixed on a very hard surface (see video below). Other test methods are also used.

There is still no reliable data that Samsung's new flagship will use the next generation of Gorilla Glass, but it is known that Samsung was the first to use Victus in 2020, while Apple bought the exclusive Ceramic Shield glass from company. The company has said that the Victus 2 will be coming to the flagship smartphone in "the next few months", so it's likely to be the February Galaxy S23 launch.
