Earlier this week, Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform to the general public, which will be the hardware foundation for future flagship smartphones from various manufacturers. One of the new features is support for hardware-accelerated ray tracing in games. Now Oppo has clearly shown how this innovation works in practice.
To demonstrate the capabilities of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, Oppo made a complete gameplay scene of the first-person shooter Camp Guard, which has over 2,000 physical models, 800,000 triangles, and around 100 textures. Oppo and Qualcomm worked together to test drivers, optimize shaders and create a game scene compiler.
As a result of these activities, the new mobile platform is capable of displaying various ray tracing effects while supporting high frame rates.
Using Variable Rate Shading technology allows for smooth gameplay. The game scene demo in 720p resolution at 60 frames per second features high-precision lighting of in-frame objects and realistic shadow shifts.
One of the challenges of ray tracing is related to realistic rendering of the water surface. In Oppo's demo, you can see ripples on the water's surface, reflections of sunlight, and even traces of ripples in the background.
