T800 5G: the Taiwanese giant's new chip designed for IoT devices

Taiwanese MediaTek has revealed several chips designed for IoT devices, Chromebooks and smart TVs, which will appear in various products as early as 2023.

The MediaTek T800 5G modem is designed for non-smartphone devices i.e. IoT devices. It supports a wide range of bands, including mmWave and sub 6 GHz. The theoretical maximum speed on the input channel is 7.9 Gb / s, on the output - 4.2 Gb / s, which exceeds the actual speed of modern networks. The modem supports simultaneous operation of two SIM cards. The T800 is manufactured using a 4nm process, increasing battery life in end devices.

The MediaTek Kompanio 520 and 528 chipsets are for entry-level Chromebooks. It uses 8-core processors: 2 Arm Cortex-A76 cores and 6 Cortex-A55 cores. The A55 cores in both cases operate at a clock frequency of 2.0 GHz, while in the Kompanio 520 the productive A76s have the same 2.0 GHz, and in the Kompanio 528 they have been overclocked to 2.2 GHz - there are no other differences between chipsets. The Arm Mali G52 MC2 2EE subsystem is responsible for the graphics. There is also a dual-core APU to work with artificial intelligence algorithms.

LPDDR4x memory and eMMC 5.1 drives are supported. The chipsets also support cameras up to 32MP, have hardware optimizations for VP9 decoding and H.265 encoding, and support video communications at up to 60fps. Chromebooks based on these chipsets will be able to run native Full HD+ displays and optional Full HD displays.

Finally, the Pentonic 1000 platform targets 4K TVs up to 144Hz. Wi-Fi 6/6E, Dolby Vision IQ with Precision Detail (greater detail in bright and dark areas) and split screen into 8 streams are supported, there is also a powerful AI processor. The CPU is a 4-core Arm Cortex-A73 clocked at 2.0 GHz, while the graphics are handled by an Arm Mali-G57 MC2. MediaTek clarified that devices on new platforms will be available for sale in 2023.
