Apple Watch Ultra protected by sapphire crystal is put to the test

In September, the Apple Watch Ultra smart watch was launched, whose dial is protected by a sapphire crystal. Famous video blogger JerryRigEverything decided to test the strength of this glass.

The blogger published a video on his YouTube channel, where he demonstrated the progress of the tests. A professional Diamond Selector 2 device, designed to determine the authenticity of gemstones and sapphire crystals, was used. The tester confirmed that Apple used natural sapphire in the cameras of the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Ultra.

At the same time, it turned out that the strength of the glass on the Ultra version is the same as on a regular Apple Watch. That is, it can be scratched with a material with hardness 6 on the Mohs scale. Meanwhile, on the Garmin Fenix​​7 Sapphire Solar watch, the glass is only scratched by a material with a hardness 8.

According to the blogger himself, the different results can be explained by the degree of purity of the sapphire. Apple is likely to use glass with a significant amount of impurities, so it's more vulnerable to scratches.
