Hard drives refuse to die, Toshiba launches a 20 TB

Electronics giant announced MG10 hard drives with a capacity of up to 20 TB for professional use

Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH announced MG10 hard drives with a capacity of up to 20 TB. The drives are focused on the enterprise sector: they are designed for use in data centers as well as servers for cloud infrastructures.

LFF devices are made using FC-MAMR (Flux Control Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology - magnetic recording with flow controlled microwave support. Thanks to this system, up to 2 TB of data can be written to one card. The 20TB MG10 disk contains 10 platters. Traditional magnetic CMR recording is used.

The storage tank uses a helium-filled sealed design. SATA 3.0 interface is used for connection, but SAS options are also promised. The spindle speed is 7200 rpm, the buffer size is 512 MB. The declared steady state data transfer rate reaches 281 MB/s. Available with 4Kn and 512e sectors. The power consumption of new items does not exceed 9.3 watts.

Units can be operated 24 hours a day. MTTF is 2.5 million hours, manufacturer's warranty is five years. The devices are designed for a load of up to 550TB per year. Toshiba will begin sample deliveries of 20TB MG10 disks in the fourth quarter of this year. Note that Toshiba is still the only one on the market that uses MAMR in its units.

It should be noted that competing companies introduced a 20TB HDD much earlier. Then, in December of last year, Seagate announced Exos X20 and IronWolf Pro (CMR w/o EAMR) hard drives with 20TB capacity, and in March 2022, launched 20TB SkyHawk AI (CMR) drives for surveillance systems. by video. Western Digital introduced the 20TB Ultrastar DC HC560 and WD Gold (CMR Recording with EAMR) last November.
