STREAMING

Daniel Ek, Spotify's CEO, announced this week that US users should expect a price increase during 2023. He did not, however, specify which formulas will be affected, the amount of this increase or the markets where it will be increased. However, there are great possibilities that the European market will be affected.
This decision is part of a context of general price increases in the world of music streaming; Recently, Deezer and Apple Music have also made changes to their prices upwards. Spotify had already done the same last year. The company had made significant increases in its family and student formulas in several European countries.
We'll have to wait for Spotify to decide to provide more information to see more clearly; but as it stands, the main unknown concerns the standard formula. Among the three Streaming giants, the Swedish company remains, for the moment, the only one to offer a basic formula of less than €10 per month; the equivalent formula on Deezer and Apple Music costs one euro more, or €10.99.
The platform could decide to stay below this symbolic bar to maintain a competitive advantage; but given that it is already very well established and has a large base of loyal users, the company may well decide to increase its margins, as its competition did.
In the meantime, it will be interesting to observe the course of the struggle between the company and American artist Kanye West, against the backdrop of the anti-Semitic statements posted on Twitter.
