Cybercriminals target their attacks in the cloud
As a result of the coronavirus epidemic, telecommuting has become a permanent pillar of operations for many companies, but the infrastructure changes it brings, such as the transition to cloud services, have also shifted the focus of cyberattacks. Recent AtlasVPN Report Based on cybercriminals often targeting cloud servers when launching attacks, 41% of organizations surveyed reported the cloud as their first point of entry, which is a 10% increase over the previous year.
This trend is not surprising given that cloud servers have replaced company-owned servers in many places, which were still the top attack vector in 2021, and in the 2022 survey they are already in third place (37), while the second company e-mails took up 40 percent of the place. Other popular entry points include remote access servers (31%), employee-owned mobile devices (29%) and DDoS attacks (26%).
While cloud solutions are more widespread, security strategies react more slowly to new technologies than expected: 48% of companies have detected at least one cyberattack in the last 12 months. While cybersecurity spending has increased by 60%, the number of attacks is still up 5% from the previous year.
Among the countries surveyed, Dutch companies seem to be the most affected: 57% of the Dutch reported having suffered a cyberattack during the past year, followed by the French (52%). While UK companies have the fewest cyberattacks of any country surveyed, they topped the list in terms of the average cost of all attacks ($28,000).
The data is based on the Hiscox Cyber Readiness Report 2022, for which responses were collected through a questionnaire of 5,181 US and European cybersecurity strategy professionals in eight countries between November 2021 and January 2022.
