APPLE
On time, Apple announced its latest lineup of iPhones, including the next-gen iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. These models feature the most powerful camera on an iPhone, the fastest processor on any smartphone, and a host of other new display features.
The biggest update, and the one that tops most users' list, is the camera.
The main lens on both Pro models has been upgraded to 48 megapixels (MP) - four times the size of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, and even last year's Pro models.
However, this is the average for Android phones in recent years. This main camera is supported by a front camera with a depth sensor, and at the rear by an ultra wide-angle and two telephoto lenses, all 12 MP.
To use them, the phones use a four-pixel sensor, which Apple claims allows for better low-light image capture and allows the telephoto lens to take full-resolution photos using the middle section. Other photography enhancements include an action mode for smoother fast-moving videos and a flash system that adapts to different focal lengths.
The iPhone 14 Pro has a 6.1-inch OLED Super Retina display with a resolution of 2556 x 1179 pixels, while the Pro Max scales up to 6.7 inches and 2796 x 1290 pixels.
The refresh rate hits 120Hz and peak brightness hits 2,000 nits outdoors, which is a new high for smartphones in general.
The screen also has some new features. Apple has finally joined the Always On group, where information such as time, date and reminders can be shown on the display even when not in use.
New is what Apple calls the Dynamic Island, and it's a pretty clever reworking and redirection of the familiar notch - a black rectangle cut out across the top of the screen that houses the front camera.
This black space now expands and reshapes itself to display various information such as incoming calls, FaceID verification animation, navigation directions, music details or sports scores.
Everything runs on the new A16 Bionic chip, which Apple claims is the fastest chip in any smartphone. It features a 6-core CPU that is 40% faster than other phones, a 5-core GPU with 50% more memory bandwidth than the previous generation, and a 16-core neural engine that can perform nearly 17 trillion times. operations per second.
Battery life is better too, especially since Apple has started measuring it in hours rather than comparing it to previous models.
The iPhone 14 Pro can last up to 23 hours of continuous video playback, while the Pro Max can last for 29 hours. That should mean several days of regular use.
