In 2019, enthusiasts managed to overclock the Xiaomi Mi 9 smartphone's screen from 60Hz to 84Hz, which made the animation noticeably smoother.
Now, developer Mishaal Rahman has gone through a similar process of overclocking the Google Pixel 6a's screen, resulting in the phone's refresh rate increasing from 60Hz to 90Hz.
Mishaal Rahman said that the Google Pixel 6a has the same screen as the Pixel 6, which runs at 90Hz, so the Pixel 6a's screen can be fully overclocked to 90Hz. However, the Pixel 6a cannot intelligently switch between 60Hz and 90Hz, but can be forced to run at a refresh rate of 90Hz.
While the Pixel 6a's screen may be overclocked to 90Hz, it will take some time to see if this will affect the device's lifespan. Also, a high refresh rate often means higher power consumption, which can affect the Pixel 6a's battery life.
The device costs about $450.
