TSMC to build a new advanced semiconductor manufacturing plant in the US
TSMC held an event to celebrate the completion of the main construction phase of the Fab 21 plant near Phoenix, Arizona, USA. The object was erected very quickly – the work was carried out from last March to July this year.
The company said that more than 4,000 people, including company employees and partners, attended the event that marks the installation of the last beam at the Fab 21 factory. And products based on 5nm technology will be produced here. However, construction is not yet complete: anti-vibration systems will be installed, electricity, sewage and air conditioning will be installed, after which the installation of production equipment will begin.
Production at the TSMC Fab 21 factory will begin in early 2024. In the initial stage, the company's throughput will be 20,000 silicon wafers per month (WSPM) using N5 (5nm) equipment. The total area of the facility is 445.15 hectares, which means that it will be possible to open other stages of production here, thus increasing productivity to 100,000 sheets per month – if there is demand, of course. To date, the cost of the company, according to various estimates, has ranged from $10 billion to $12 billion.
