EU may have its own DNS
The European Digital Agency has proposed creating a single pan-European DNS service that meets all local legal and security requirements. The platform is aimed at corporate and private Internet users.
The service will work not only in terms of state funding: additional paid services are expected, aimed both at improving security (filtering, monitoring, 24/7 technical support) and solving professional problems for customers in various sectors. In addition, there is the possibility of working in a partner format for Internet providers and companies that offer cloud services.
All this is already available in one form or another in the range of DNS providers such as CloudFlare and OpenDNS, but the essence of the idea is that the European Commission is not satisfied with its dependence on private companies, which, moreover, are located mainly outside European jurisdiction. The agency notes that the new service "filters URLs that lead to illegal content based on applicable EU law." These tools will actually allow you to censor internet content or remove it, but only in strict compliance with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) adopted in Europe.
The project was named DNS4EU, the corresponding contest ends on March 22, 2022.
