MICROSOFT

Xbox One goes offline

Microsoft revealed this Wednesday (13) that it has already ended production of all consoles in the Xbox One line to focus exclusively on the Series S and Series X models. new units of the old console generation, which debuted in 2013, are no longer manufactured.

This means that for more than a year, the products found in stores around the world have been stocks that had already been distributed for a considerable time. “To focus on production of the Xbox Series X/S, we stopped manufacturing all Xbox One consoles in late 2020,” Cindy Walker, Senior Director of Console Product Marketing, confirmed to The Verge.

The news comes at a time when Sony has confirmed that it will continue to produce new PlayStation 4 units as a way to compensate for the PlayStation 5's supply problems. According to the company, its intention is to offer more casual consumers an entry platform capable of satisfy the desire to play at a time when the most powerful (and expensive) hardware is still hard to come by.

Bet on two models helps in Microsoft's plans...The decision to discontinue production of the Xbox One in 2020 seems to be directly related to the company's decision to bet on two console models in the current generation. While the Xbox Series X also suffers from the lack of global-scale components that we're experiencing, the Series S has proven relatively easy to find.

Although the platform brings more modest hardware, it takes the place that a previous generation console could have and offers a competitive entry price (US$ 299). Thus, Microsoft must not have seen more sense in keeping the production of older platforms, however much they could be sold for an even lower value.

In a recent interview with the New York Times podcast, Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division, stated that both the Series S and Series X have broken the sales records of previous generations of the platform in the 14 months they have been in stores. According to him, the manufacturing lines are working normally, and the difficulty in finding some models of the hardware is due to a demand outside the curve.
