OSOM

Former Essential Phone employees create an interesting new gadget

Essential, founded by Android creator Andy Rubin, failed with its first and only Essential Phone PH-1 smartphone. However, the talented people Rubin hired founded OSOM, which today finally unveiled the first image of its upcoming OV1 smartphone.

In an interview with Android Police, OSOM founder Jason Keats talked about the upcoming OV1 smartphone, what it will bring and the company's goals. OSOM OV1 is inspired by the Essential Phone PH-1. The smartphone is also equipped with a fingerprint sensor located on the back panel and a dual main camera. However, the main focus of the new product is confidentiality – the company says that one of its main goals is to give users back control over their personal data.

Keats said one of the biggest challenges Essential has faced is a lack of focus on its own core product. OSOM, on the other hand, has gone to great lengths to work on its smartphone hardware and software. It's worth noting that the new product will run Android with Google's services, but will offer users 100 times more powerful privacy tools than what Android offers by default. Keats notes that most of the changes OSOM is making to Google's operating system will be “deep”, while the surface layer will look standard on Android.

Almost nothing is known about the technical characteristics of the device, except that it will be based on the Qualcomm chipset. OSOM OV1 will be introduced to the general public next spring or summer. It is assumed that for the first time the smartphone will be sold only in the United States, Canada and some European countries.
