Russian regulator blocks popular etsy.com website

On December 1st, Roskomnadzor blocked the marketplace of the American company Etsy, specialized in the sale of handcrafted and vintage products, in addition to sewing accessories. Interestingly, the decision to block it was made based on a court order issued 2.5 years ago. This was reported by the tjournal feature.

The blockade was carried out by decision of the court of the Oktyabrsky District Court of Tambov, of July 25, 2019. According to the prosecutor, who then went to court, he noticed in the market “information with advertising and sale of accessories from a well-known brand with delivery within the Russian Federation”. We are talking about non-genuine Gucci accessories.

Although the court order should have blocked only the www.etsy.com/market/gucci_replica page with replica Gucci products, the entire site was blocked. According to the secretariat, the reason for this is the use of the HTTPS protocol: it is not possible to block the page on this site, so the secretariat closed access to the entire portal via IP. Roskomnadzor reported that the site would be unblocked after the removal of the prohibited information page. According to tjournal.ru, this page on the Etsy website has already been removed, so it is expected that the market will resume work soon.
