Mobile traffic volume grew 300 times, according to Ericsson
Ericsson has published a new Mobility Report. The company has collected, summarized and analyzed data on the mobile communications market for 10 years – in 2011, it produced its first report on industry trends. Additionally, the forecast for the development of the communications market until 2027 was announced.
Ericsson believes 5G could become the fastest growing mobile standard in history. The forecast is that by the end of this year there will be 660 million subscribers on the fifth-generation global networks. In the third quarter alone, 98 million new 5G users were added, while the number of 4G users worldwide grew by 48 million. Probably, by the end of the year, more than 2 billion people will use fifth generation communication.
According to the company's forecasts, 5G will become the dominant mobile technology in 2027, when it will reach 75% of the world's population, accounting for 62% of global smartphone traffic.
Since 2011, the rollout of 4G LTE networks has been a key driver of 5.5 billion new smartphone users worldwide. In total, more than 20,000 models of devices with 4G support were launched on the market. At the same time, 5G is being deployed almost three times faster than previous generation communication technology was introduced.
This contributes to the explosive growth of mobile traffic. It grew 42 percent year-over-year to 78 exabytes in the third quarter of 2021, including traffic generated by fixed wireless services. In the third quarter alone, mobile traffic was higher than all mobile traffic from beginning to end of 2016. According to Ericsson statistics, mobile networks now transmit 300 times more data than 10 years ago. Total mobile traffic is expected to reach 370 exabytes by the end of 2027.
