Startup develops mailbox to store deliveries made by drones

Drone delivery systems still raise many questions. In particular, what to do with the package if no one is at home at the time of unmanned delivery? DroneDek, a startup, developed a mailbox with a similar scenario in mind.

An Indianapolis (USA) company has created a “smart” mailbox that can be securely attached to the floor or wall of a home. These boxes will be part of a larger system in which customers will use a special application to order goods and products from companies participating in the project and wishing to use compatible technologies.

Delivery will be based on the GPS coordinates transmitted by the mailbox itself. After arriving at the place of “delivery” of the order, the UAV will transmit a special code to the box, having received it, it will open the sliding lid. In turn, the drone will lower the package into the container using a special retractable cable. After that, the cover will close and the drone will fly to the base. If necessary, it will be pre-grounded in the wireless charging box.

Inside, DroneDek will scan the package's QR code to identify the order and then contact the owner with delivery information. If desired, the user can even look at the package via the video link – there is a camera and lighting inside. Products that need to be kept warm (food) or cooled (medicines) are expected to also have automatic temperature control.

In future plans – use DroneDek systems to recognize traces of explosives and even hazardous biological substances and notify law enforcement agencies about it. Furthermore, the multifunctional mailbox will be able to sterilize packages, killing viruses and bacteria on its surface.

The package can be removed by opening the door on the side/rear panel. To do this, you will need to open the lock using an integrated biometric scanner, a digital combination lock or a special code in the app.

The model can also be used like a regular mailbox – messengers will be able to place letters and packages in it just like drones.

The forecast is that the system will be available from next year, the price of the new items will be announced later.
