Tencent Games and ARM want to make game graphics more realistic

The game's graphics on smartphones promise to rise to a new height. Tencent's Chinese media giant, Tencent Games, has teamed up with ARM to work on a new generation of graphics engines.
Together with ARM, Tencent Games launched a survey to improve the quality of graphics for mobile games, their performance and reduce consumption. The aim of the cooperation is to raise the quality of game graphics for mobile devices to the level of AAA category computer blockbusters.
Development partners have adopted the graphics architecture of the GPU ARM Mali as the basis for the future mobile graphics rendering engine. The graphics pipelines of Mali's GPU will be optimized and reorganized for better visualization, without significantly increasing the computational and energy load on mobile processors. In particular, software analysis and debugging interfaces have been incorporated into ARM development systems, which have become the best tool for developing and customizing games for mobile devices.

In addition, Tencent Games and ARM have already improved rendering mechanisms in several application areas. For example, a deeply optimized deferred shading pipeline for mobile devices is provided to render complex scenes with hundreds of dynamic lights. For post-processing processes, bloom (fading), volumetric lighting (volumetric lighting), FXAA / SMAA effects and several other equally interesting features are proposed. And to avoid excessive memory usage, the GPU Mali uses the features of the Vulkan API (Subpass Merge) and OpenGL (ES Pixel Local Storage).

The proposed optimizations already enable savings of more than 30% in energy consumption and efficiency in several models of ARM processors, with an average reduction in operating temperature of 3-5 ° C. At the same time, the GPU guarantees continuous rendering at high frame rates and the highest quality. Only one question remains: will these opportunities be open to everyone or just the Tencent Games?
