Google Pixel 4a billed to be cheaper than the iPhone SE
The Google Pixel 4a was initially expected to start at US$399, but a new leak claims the phone could be US$50 cheaper. This would make it cheaper than the iPhone SE, the biggest challenger to the Pixel 4a in the mid-range segment.
The Google Pixel 4a was expected to be launched in the first half of May but that's rather unlikely now; the mid-range Pixel could now be released sometime next month if recent reports are anything to go by. While that may be disappointing to expectant fans, a new piece of information may even things out.
According to Steven Hall, Managing Editor at 9to5Google, the Pixel 4a may be even cheaper than expected. Hall is typically reliable on such matters and claims to have heard whispers that the Pixel 4a will start at US$349, instead of US$399 as has been said for months. It's important to point out that Hall is only reporting what he's heard, so this doesn't carry as much weight as first-hand information.
The Pixel 3a cost US$399, so it was expected that the 4a would follow in its footsteps. That may not be the case, however. The Pixel 4a is expected to come in two storage configurations; 64/128 GB. The 64 GB model is likely the one with the US$349 MSRP, while the US$399 could sit at the original US$399. That'd be a smart move by Google, as the lack of expandable storage would mean more buyers opt for the higher storage trim.
A US$349 base price tag means the Pixel 4a would undercut the iPhone SE by US$50, as the US$399 base iPhone SE ships with just 64 GB. Considering the Pixel 4a will likely sport better hardware than the iPhone SE, this move could make it the mid-range phone of choice in the US. Hopefully, we see more of this pricing strategy from Google moving forward.
