STREAMING
Netflix released a report to the market in which it reveals that Part 4 of “La Casa de Papel” has already been seen by more than 65 million people. The statement was made to investors, reflecting the significant increase in subscribers and the large profit achieved during the beginning of the quarantine forced by the new coronavirus pandemic.
Launched on April 3, the new season of the Spanish series is considered the biggest hit of the year in the Netflix catalog, closely followed by the documentary attraction of the “Mafia of Tigers” (Tiger King), which would have been seen by 64 million accounts in its first month of streaming.
The numbers are impressive, but they are also overestimated.
It is worth remembering that Netflix has recently changed its way of counting series viewers. The platform considers that a viewer saw a series watching just two minutes of a chapter. According to the company, this would be enough to indicate that the choice “was intentional”.
Previously, the measurement was based only on episodes that had 70% completed airing.
The inspiration for this change was the measurement of YouTube. The detail is that 2 minutes of a YouTube video can mean a complete music clip. Or the length of a trailer.
The fact is that as soon as it changed its measurement, Netflix started to record unlikely audience records.
As no data can be checked independently, the platform numbers should be considered as indicative only.
Given these inflated numbers, “The Witcher” would be the biggest record holder on the platform, seen by 76 million people in its first month of release, last year.
