Grindr's owner sells app for $ 608 million
China's Beijing Kunlun Tech announced today (6) the sale of Grindr, a popular relationship app, for about$ 608.5 million.
The transaction takes place after a U.S. government panel set June 2020 as the deadline for the sale of the application. The panel, called the Foreign Investment Committee in the United States (CFIUS), did not disclose its concerns about Kunlun's ownership of Grindr.
However, the United States has increasingly monitored application developers about the security of personal data they manipulate, especially if some of them involve the country's military or intelligence personnel. Kunlun said it agreed to sell its 98.59% stake in Grindr to the San Vicente Acquisition.
Kunlun's control over Grindr fueled concerns among us privacy advocates. Democratic senators Edward Markey and Richard Blumenthal sent a letter to Grindr in 2018 demanding answers on how the application protected users ' privacy.
Reuters reported last year that Kunlun had given some Beijing engineers access to personal information from millions of Americans, including private messages and HIV status.
