IFA 2019-G8X ThinQ launched, new second screen accessory also includes third ancillary display

As expected, LG has officially revealed its latest smartphone flagship at Berlin’s IFA 2019 expo. The new LG G8X ThinQ is also offered with a new sleeker second-screen accessory that also includes a third 2.1-inch monochrome ancillary on its rear for notifications when the second screen accessory case is folded over the main display.
While its arch-rival Samsung has just (re) launched its Galaxy Fold with fancy flexible OLED panel, LG is content to continue with a somewhat more conventional approach to adding additional screen real estate to its smartphones. Its new G8X ThinQ follows in the footsteps of its V50 ThinQ 5G smartphone launched earlier this year by offering a second screen add on case accessory. This time around, however, the second screen is a perfect pixel-for-pixel match for the main display on the smartphone itself. Not only that, it packs a small 2.1-inch monochrome OLED display on its rear that shows the time and notifications when the case is folded over closed.



Both the G8X ThinQ displays (assuming the second screen case is accessory) are 6.4-inches 19: 5: 9 Full HD + OLED FullVision types with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels for a pixel density of 403 ppi and support for HDR10. Both also incorporate a teardrop style notch. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 powered to 6 GB of RAM with 128 GB of onboard storage expandable to 2 TB with microSD card. The battery is a healthy 4,000 mAh and supports fast charging via Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 tech.
The main 12 MP rear camera has F1 / 8 aperture with a high-speed shutter to reduce image blur. The second rear sensor is a 13 MP type with a super wide 136-degree field of view. Unlike much of its competition (and despite pioneering triple-rear cameras) there is no third shooter. However, as with all of LG's recent flagship smartphones, audio remains a focus with a 32-bit quad-DAC on board with audio tuned by high-end audio company Meridian. It also offers Dolby DTS: X 3D surround sound. It is IP68 rated for water and dust ingress protection with wireless connectivity limited to 4G LTE and WiFi 5 (ac). LG is yet to reveal the price, shipping or regional availability.
