Facebook and Google know when you see pornography ... even in incognito mode
A study carried out by the University of Pennsylvania and Carnegie Mellon and Microsoft reports that technology companies such as Google, Facebook and Oracle have crawlers on porn sites that are able to track Internet activity. And yes, they can do it even when they are navigating incognito.
The researchers analyzed 22,484 pages of pornographic sites, finding that the sites are being used by the three major technology companies to gather data about their users. "The fact that the crawler on adult sites is so similar to online trading should be cause for concern," one researcher, Elena Maris, points out in the New York Times.
While Facebook and Oracle did not respond to this news, Google said it did not use this data to create profiles and sell them to advertisers. "We do not allow Google Ads on sites with adult content and we prohibit personalized ads and ad profiles based on users' sexual interests and related online activities," the Google statement said.
