The theft of criptomoedas worth 2.4 million dollars through SIM cardsNine people belonging to a criminal group were charged with alleged misuse of SIM cards and criptomoedas theft amounting to more than $2.4 million. Known as The Community, its members live between the United States and Ireland and used a scheme known as SIM hijacking. Whether through bribing or using tricks, hackers persuaded telecom operators to transfer a phone number to a new SIM card.
According to The Verge, through access to the telephone number, criminals could easily overcome security measures, such as two-factor authentication, gaining access to accounts and virtual currency portfolios of victims. The indictment states that the group used this technique at least seven times to steal the crypto-coins.
Parallel to this case, three operators of the telecommunications companies involved in the scheme were also brought to court for accepting bribery of the crime. The suspects were charged with mockery and identity theft. M. F.
