Putin Stalin's fashion signs law of the ''independent network''
President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that will allow the creation of an independent Russian internet, capable of operating separately from what happens in the rest of the world, the RIA-Novosti news agency reports.
The new law aims to protect Russia from foreign online restrictions by creating what the Kremlin calls a local "sustainable, secure and fully functional" internet. The legislation comes into force in November.
According to RIA-Novosti, the law suggests the creation of a management and monitoring center under the supervision of Roskomnadzor, the Russian telecommunications agency, which will be in charge of securing a communications service in Russia in extraordinary situations. In these situations will have the power to cut off the external traffic in the network, which will create a purely Russian internet.
This does not appeal to Russian activists, who fear that an independent internet will involve the creation of a firewall to monitor and censor the content circulating on the network, as in China. Fábio Nunes, Portugal
