Malaysian girl suicide linked to poll on Instagram for life or death
A Malaysian portal wrote that a teenage girl committed suicide by jumping from the third floor of a shop in eastern Malaysia in Sarawak state.
A 16-year-old Malaysian teenager ended up committing suicide after voting on Instagram, urging followers to choose between life and death. In the vote, 69% of the votes went to the death option, Astro Awani said on Tuesday (14).
According to the Malaysian portal, the girl jumped from the third floor of a shop in the Bandar Baru Batu Kawa neighborhood of Kuching city. Officials would have discovered that she had posted to Facebook a status, written in all capital letters, indicating that she wanted to end her life: "I want to quit my life, I'm tired."
In addition to writing disturbing messages on Facebook and Instagram, a farewell message would have been left by the young woman at WeChat for friends.
Ramkarpal Singh, a renowned lawyer and Malaysian parliamentarian, hopes that the people who voted for the girl's death are punished.
"Would the girl be alive today if most of her followers on the Instagram had discouraged her from committing suicide?" Asked the parliamentarian, who asked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Ministry to investigate the case, suggesting that the girl was very possibly suffering from depression.
A primary investigation would have indicated that the distance of the father from the young woman, who married, lives in Singapore and who almost never visited her in Malaysia, could have driven her to kill herself. M. F.
