Google erases links to prohibited websites in Russia
Google has reached an agreement with Russian authorities to erase links to banned websites in the Russian Federation, local media reported today.
The daily Vedomosti has reported that Google has reached an agreement with state media regulator Roskomnadzor and will regularly receive a listing of banned sites to erase calls.
The newspaper said that Google has already removed about 70% of the prohibited sites from its search engine.
The RIA Novosti news agency quoted Roskomnadzor as saying that it had established a "constructive dialogue" with Google.
Last December, Roskomnadzor fined Google 500,000 rubles (5,900 euros) for not erasing links to prohibited sites. Also at the time, it threatened to block access to Google if it did not comply with the orders.
"We are committed to providing access to information for the benefit of our users in the Russian Federation and in the world," said a Google spokesman, Nu Wexler.
The company has not made any more official comments. Lusa Agency
