WannaCry is still active and only in the last quarter did 75,000 victims
Regarded as one of the biggest cyberattacks ever with ransomware, hundreds of thousands of businesses were affected by WannaCry in May 2017. Hackers infested computers, encrypted them and demanded victim rescues to decrypt files and return them to their source data.
Although Windows updates allow it to withstand the exploitation of EternalBlue, the exploit that was used to propagate WannaCry, statistically there are still many hackers who continue to exploit computers that have not yet been fully recovered and according to Kaspersky, in the last quarter of 2018 were infected about 75,000 users. WannaCry is responsible for 28.72% of attacks by crytors, according to a security expert.
According to a company report, its security tools have protected nearly 260,000 users against cryptors attacks, a 39% increase over the second quarter of 2018, which saw 159,000 victims.
Kaspersky leaves some tips and recommends keeping the operating system up to date, to reduce vulnerabilities, along with ransomware protection solutions. If you detect the presence of malicious software you should not make payments to hackers, as they are encouraged to continue this criminal practice. Always save backup copies of your computer files for replacement if they are lost. If possible, store them on an external disk or in the cloud. Sapo
