News in China will be read by Artificial Intelligence anchor
The Chinese government's news agency has announced that it will use pivots by Articiail Intelligence (AI) to read the video news, bringing us closer to the eventual dystopian future we are so afraid of robots take control of the world. As you can see from the video, the AI in question is based on a real pivot image, editing only the mouth zone so that it is synchronized with news that is read with a synthesized voice. According to the South China Morning Post, there will be two pivots (one for English and one for Chinese) and "will work 24 hours on the official website and various social networks, reducing the costs of producing news and improving efficiency." Given the way the Chinese government has integrated technology in cities - in order to improve levels of government oversight, resorting to facial recognition - and intends to implement social credit in the next few years, which may accentuate social disparities, it is only natural that these artificial pivots are being viewed with some fear.
