Authorities warn that sex predators are attacking in games like Fortnite
Online video games, such as Minecraft and the latest Fortnite phenomenon, offer conversation tools that can be used by sex predators looking for young people to entice. Last week, 24 men in New Jersey, United States, were arrested, including a 47-year-old police sergeant for allegedly taking advantage of video chat and social networking tools to lure young girls into sex.Authorities urge parents to monitor their children's activities online, especially the people they talk to during matches. Behaviors such as anxiety or evasive responses when the subject is mentioned may be an indicator that the child may have been pursued by a predator. Parents should talk to their children about the dangers of conversation tools, whether in video games or on social networks, alerting them to who not everyone they meet is what they appear to be.The suspects were picked up by detectives of the special force for crimes against children, posing as 14/15 year olds. The arrests were made after suspects used communications via apps such as Kik, Wishbone, Tumblr, Discord, and Fortnite and Minecraft video games.
Special agents are trained to maintain profiles online in social networks, simulating the behavior of young people, and in this way to catch the action of predators in red. Applications like Tinder are only for 18 years, but others like Tumblr, Instagram and Snapchat are at least 13 years old, but any young person who can calculate their age can easily overcome this security measure.
