Technological giants in joint effort against Iranian propaganda online
In question would be a network of websites and blogs with fake news, in association with the services Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google Plus and YouTube, designed to create a "narrative" in tune with Iranian interests. The advertisement was aimed at users in the United States, the United Kingdom, Latin America and the Middle East, according to Reuters, who quotes analysts from the cyber security company FireEye.Russia has been associated with similar online influence campaigns, including the effort to provoke political division among US voters, but FireEye stresses that the tactics used now have different purposes. In the case of Facebook, the removal of accounts will target both Iran and Russia. The social network says it has identified and banned 652 pages of groups and accounts linked to the two countries "by coordinated manipulation that included the sharing of political material."The removal of the pages, groups and accounts resulted from four investigations - three involving Iran and one involving Russia - the company said on Tuesday, through founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Lusa said.
