Slide 1 de 32: North Korea’s controversial supreme leader Kim Jong-un has an estimated $5 billion (£3.5 billion) at his disposal, according to the Huffington Post. The UN says this money should be spent on raising standards in this imporverished country and on its people but much of it isn’t. So what exactly does Kim spend a reported $600 million (£422B) a year on?

The luxury life of Kim Jong-Un
North Korea's controversial supreme leader, Kim Jong-un, has a fortune estimated at $ 20 billion, according to the Huffington Post. The United Nations claims that this money should be spent on raising standards for its impoverished country and its people, but most of the money goes to this end. So, what does Kim buy with his $ 2.5 billion a year?

Imported liquor

Although local alcohol is cheap and easy to find, this type of drink is clearly not in Kim's taste. Instead, he spends about $ 120 million a year importing liquors to his country to give to his elite circles. His favorites are whiskey and cognac, but of specific brands. He prefers the more expensive, like Hennessy, which can cost up to $ 8,900 per bottle.

Luxury cigarettes
When you have billions, it's hard for you to run into the neighborhood shop asking for a cigarette pack for the clerk. And this is the case of Kim Jong-un, who prefers French luxury cigarettes. The Yves Saint Laurent variant he likes costs $ 182 per pack, and the leather cap to carry them costs $ 685.

Ski resort
Although the development of this $ 145 million ski resort is supposed to be included in the North Korean tourism industry, the fact that Kim is a sports fan is clearly a contributing factor to the amount invested. According to the Daily Mail, the resort is described by Kim himself as "flawless", boasting a spa, restaurant and 110 km of ski runs.

Held with child labor
While it all sounds like fun on the runway for Kim, a report indicates that thousands of men, women and children work in extreme blizzard conditions with improvised hoes and paddles to keep the resort open. Children ages 11 and 12 carry heavy materials every day.

Custom yacht
Most people only dream of having a yacht, but Kim Jong-un owns a model described by his friend Dennis Rodmand as "a mix between a ferry and a Disney boat." The yacht has Fendi's interior and is valued at $ 33 million.

While its people are forbidden to interact with the outside world

The majority of the North Korean population can not make international calls, even with the fact that the country has 94% mobile coverage. All calls are vetoed by the authorities, and those who wish to call loved ones out of the country must travel to the border and use cell phones smuggled from China, according to a report by Amnesty International.

North Koreans also can not use the internet

North Korean residents have access to "kwangmyong", a home internet that also allows the use of email. Nobody can use the internet that we know, which means that access to information of what happens in the world is very limited.

Physicians and surgeons

According to deserter Hyeong-soo Kim (pictured), Kim Jong-un established the Longevity Institute with 130 doctors who should keep him healthy. The leader is known for his unhealthy lifestyle, with a diet full of and smoking heavily since adolescence.
Doctors should keep their health stable, preventing diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

While his people have almost no health care

An Amnesty International report revealed the extreme decline of the North Korean health system. Scary details of unsterilized needles, dirty sheets in hospitals and the best care available only to those who pay, so that the lives of the North Korean people are very different from their leader. In fact, this has been true since birth, and the country has a high infant mortality rate of 24.5 deaths per 1,000 births, according to the CIA World Factbook.

Slide 14 de 32: Kim has been married to Ri Sol-jun since 2009 and has been known to spend state funds on buying her precious gifts like the Christian Dior handbag she’s been spotted with. Costing $1,457 (£1,017) in the region's shopping centers, the bag comes close to trumping the annual income of the average North Korean which is a meager $1,800 (£1,256).
Expensive gifts for your wife

Kim is married to Ri Sol-Jun since 2009 and is reputed to spend government money to buy presents to her, such as a Christian Dior handbag she was seen wearing. Costing $6 thousand in shopping malls in the region, this purse almost surpasses the average annual income of the North Korean, which is $7.4 Thousand. In addition to gifts for his wife, it was reported that Kim Jong-un spent $14 million in lingerie for his "pleasure squad" in 2016. Importing suspenders and bodices from China, Kim presented the wives and girlfriends of his elite, his group of women known as the "pleasure squad."Although it is illegal to import movies in North Korea, Kim has a large collection of 20,000 DVD movies, many of them from the West. His cinematic tastes range from American classics like Rambo to Godzilla and Friday the 13th.Private luxury cinema:And the leader is not content with just a sofa and a TV to enjoy his large collection of movies. It has its own luxury cinema, with capacity for 1,000 luxury watchesKim is rarely seen without one of his sumptuous watches on his wrist. The Telegraph newspaper said its collection cost more than $35 million dollars and probably cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Gifts for senior officials
It is not just your wife who receives generous gifts. Apparently, it pays to be well-regarded by the leader, as 160 of his top officials received Mercedes-Benz sedans in 2010; generous gifts that probably cost him about $47 million.

Slide 20 de 32: The Telegraph reports that the textbooks taught in North Korean schools apparently claim that Kim was a child prodigy who learned how to drive at the tender age of three. Highly unlikely but what is true is that he has quite an impressive garage. It’s been reported that he owns up to 100 cars after beginning to collect them at a very young age. His favorite brand is Mercedes-Benz.

This is very unlikely, but it is true that it has an impressive garage. There are claims that he has more than 100 cars, and they started collecting them since he was young. Its favorite maker is Mercedes-Benz.

Slide 21 de 32: It’s no secret that Kim is not only feared but also disliked by a large majority of the repressed citizens of his country. This is likely the reason he felt a need to invest in an armored car for state visits. The luxury, customized Benz S600 is valued at a cost of $1.7 million (£1.2M) due to the protection tech it’s equipped with.

Armored Mercedes-Benz
It is no secret to anyone that Kim is feared by many, but is also detested by a large portion of the residents of his country. That's probably why he found it necessary to invest in an armored car. The luxury, a custom Benz S600, is valued at $7 million due to protection technology.

Slide 22 de 32: Kim recently gave an inside glimpse at his newly re-vamped private jet aptly named Air Force Un – a punny reference to the United States’ Presidential aircraft, Air Force One. Having added luxurious touches like crystal ash trays and leather couches, the new look is a lot more lavish than the plane’s previously clinical interior and is likely to have cost him around $1.5 million (£1M).
Air Force One

Kim recently gave a glimpse of the inside of his private jet called Air Force Un - a comic reference to the US presidential aircraft, Air Force One. He added touches of luxury like crystal ashtrays and leather seats, giving a more air luxurious interior that was previously more clinical - and this repaginada cost around $6 million.

Slide 23 de 32: Having a custom-fitted private jet simply wasn’t enough for the North Korean leader. After vamping up his jets he proceeded to spend hundreds of thousands to build private runways beside his multiple palaces so that he didn’t have to travel too far before take-off.
Private landing and take-off lanes
Having a custom jet was not enough for the North Korean leader. After upgrading his aircraft, he spent a lot of money building landing strips near his many palaces, all so he did not have to walk long before boarding.

Private golf courses

Kim Jong-il's father, Kim Jong-il, once said that he hit eleven golf holes in a row. Kim Jong-un followed in his father's footsteps in maintaining high-quality private golf courses. This hobby is not cheap because the cost of an average golf course is $12 million for construction and $2 million annually for maintenance.

Racehorses

As an equine enthusiast, Kim does not skimp on the money she spends on horse training and breeding barns. It has been reported that 20% of the state's income is used to maintain the animals and the necessary facilities. That's a huge amount, considering that the last reported amount of the nation's funding was a mere $257 million in 2008.

Slide 30 de 32: There’s not one definitive answer to the question “Where does Kim Jong-Un live?” That’s because he has a staggering 17 palaces scattered throughout the state to choose from – and even his own private island.

There is no definitive answer to the question: where does Kim Jong-un dwell? Because it has 17 palaces scattered throughout the country - and even a private island.

New (old) military equipment

Although Kim likes to spend money on luxury items for his own treat, when the subject is the North Korean military, the money is much lower than you might think. Based on data that were made public in 2008, the military budget was only $ 36 million, which is little compared to the $2 billion that Kim spends with himself and his family.

Slide 31 de 32
But the rest of the population is not so Lucky
Consumerism hardly exists outside the capital. With little income, most North Koreans spend any extra money on food for their families. Even though they have the money to spend, there are few points outside of Pyongyang to buy items. Most North Koreans live in poor conditions, or try with little comfort and lack of basic utilities such as heating or running water. Many must collect firewood to cook in their homes, and should fetch water from public taps.
