Sony announces the first 48-megapixel sensor for smartphones

Sony has announced the IMX586 sensor that adds the ability to capture 48MP images to smartphone cameras. The Japanese manufacturer says it is the first smartphone sensor to achieve this quality of resolution, and is also capable of achieving good performance in dim light scenarios.Sony explains that it was able to put 48 MP on a 0.8 micron size chip using a color filter system that allows you to insert four adjacent pixels in dimly lit environments, reducing picture noise. In this way, the sensitivity increases to the equivalent of images captured at 12 MP, resulting in scenes where both bright and dark areas can be recorded without losing detail in the shadows, for example. The technology also allows to accelerate the output processing speed and a dynamic range four times superior to the conventional products. On paper, devices equipped with the sensor can record 4K video at 90 FPS or resolutions 1080p at 240 FPS.The IMX586 sensor will begin to be manufactured from September and will premiere on the upcoming Xperia XZ models.
