Redmond giant ambitious project to put data center under water
Microsoft is pursuing a pilot project that can improve the quality of internet services in coastal cities through renewable energy. The goal is noble but, to do so, it is necessary that the project, which involves putting a data center under water, be successful.
The project, named Project Natick, will put a data center at a depth of just over 35 meters off the Orkney Islands in Scotland. The choice of location was due to the fact that these islands are a genuine renewable energy center, with the project to last for five years.
The data center that will be submerged has a total of 864 servers which, to get a sense, would be able to store about five million movies, says the Business Insider.
