UK blames Russia for being at source of NotPetya attack
Russia has been behind the cyberattack that became known as NotPetya, started in June 2017 against Ukraine and then spread to all of Europe, the British Foreign Ministry said Thursday. The official said that the attack originated in the Russian military. The decision to open the prosecution serves to show that "the UK and its allies will not tolerate any malicious cyber activity," he said in a statement quoted by Reuters.Moscow has once again denied "categorically" the accusations. "We consider them unfounded. This is no more than the continuation of a 'russophobic' campaign without any evidence, "a Kremlin spokesman said. The attack that became known as NotPetya, although it had been assigned other designations, targeted the financial and energy sectors of Ukraine as well as the Government, but eventually affected electricity, oil, gas, transportation, world. The propagated virus is included in the category of ransomware, causing computers to become inactive after the malware encrypts all files on the disk and displays a message asking for a ransom.
