Facial recognition glasses are the new "weapon" of Chinese police

Some of the Chinese police officers are now armed with face recognition goggles that allows them to automatically identify people who are being sought by the law. The use of this new gadget has proved fruitful since, since its implementation, public security forces have already managed to detain seven people involved in serious crimes and 26 others for possession of false identification documents.According to the People's Daily, officers patrolling the streets with this equipment have concentrated on Beijing's public transportation system. The Wall Street Journal writes that the glasses were developed by LLVision Technology. The company is known for the development of cameras, but for some years now it has been developing a facial recognition system that has never been available in the market. The company says the technology can identify a person in 0.1 seconds.

To mark a wanted person, the glasses cross in real time with a database containing information on more than 10,000 people sought by the Chinese justice system. Wu Fei, the technology's CEO, explains that the success rate can drop under real conditions given the "outside environment noise."Although the use of this gadget is worrying some non-governmental organizations, as is the case of Amnesty International (AI), it is recalled that the Chinese government has a very dominant position on the Internet and the Chinese technological industry. Social products like Facebook and Instagram or Google's search engine are banned, and local netizens also can not use VPNs to access these services. For AI's William Need, this decision "has the potential to make China's surveillance network into a ubiquitous system."It is recalled that a computer database is being developed for the storage of data for the entire population of China, which now reaches 1.37 billion people.
